Coffee.

-->
Sipping a latte. Hot coffee. Foamed milk. Creamy. A pleasurable experience from the moment it hits my tongue. Peace. Calm. Refuge.
In that moment, everything else stops.

I have been madly in love with coffee since I was a young teenager. From the very beginning of my ability to drive a car, trips to White Rock Coffee (my favorite local Dallas coffeeshop), Starbucks, or other coffee shops has been a favorite pastime. Even during the times when my checking account balance is $4, I will use $2.87 of that $4.00 to get myself a coffee. Now, I know plenty of people who drink coffee on a regular basis, but for most of them it’s a matter of getting their caffeine fix. For me, the coffee experience goes so far beyond a mere chemically induced reaction. It’s a combination of sensory experiences—the feeling of the mug in my hands (which, I must admit, produces a much cozier feeling than a plastic or paper cup), the blend of brown, black, and white colors in perfect harmony, the warmth of the liquid, the rich and decadent taste, the texture of the foam or whipped cream on a latte or mocha, the sound of the conversation I might be having with a friend next to me. I can be loaded down with stress about my life, studying for an exam, or simply taking the time to enjoy one of life’s little pleasures, and the coffee I’m sipping is my companion in whatever state I am in. Maybe I sound crazy, but imagining my life without enjoying a frequent cup of joe is to imagine a life that is incomplete.

  2. Spoken like a true Blackburn descendant. Coffee time on Crawford Creek "among an assortment of Blackburns on a long front porch," each with a cup filled to the brim with joe, was a time to be cherished. When our cousin Callie Hines was in World War II stationed "somewhere in New Guinea," he wrote Daddy a letter in which he said how he longed to be here for coffee time on Crawford Creek.
    Enjoyed you blog. I hope you are having a good summer. Love, Peggy

  3. I'm right there with you, Eva! Coffee is a good thing for people to bond over, as well. Have you ever seen the movie Coffee and Cigarettes? If not, you should. I think you might enjoy it. Probably not as much as I do, but you should see it anyway.
